After 2 years without a solo single, Selena Gomez returned to music with Lose You to Love Me, exciting many fans. The song currently sits at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and the music video has 117 million views, but most articles written in the past few weeks since its release have not been about her success. Her past relationship with Justin Bieber is the focus of the media.

To a certain degree, this is understandable. The single is largely speculated to be about their relationship, with lyrics on Justin not being supportive and about him quickly replacing Selena after their last breakup for his now-wife, Hailey Bieber. However, the song is meant to provide closure from their complicated past with the closing lyrics being “And now the chapter is closed and done / And now it's goodbye, it's goodbye for us.”

As a long-time Jelena fan, I admit it is also hard for me to accept that my favorite celebrity couple is no longer together. But ever since Justin and Hailey got married, it has been easy to see that Jelena is a thing of the past. However, media outlets have used every little bit of information from their on-and-off relationship as news for the past 8 years and definitely won’t stop anytime soon.

Even though they have both released songs about one another, I think it would be better for both of them if media outlets could stop referencing their past anytime something happens to either of them. Both have expressed a desire to move on and it can’t be easy to do so when articles and photos of the two are still everywhere. Similarly, Selena’s best friend, Taylor Swift, is always a hot topic when she releases new music because her songs are often about her exes but are rarely brought up after the first “news cycle.”

But in the case of Selena and Justin, they are always mentioned together, no matter what. Even just a few days ago, a mashup of Lose You to Love Me and Justin Bieber’s, Sorry, went viral on YouTube. Which once again shows that we can’t let go and allow them to move on. I hope that in the next few months, Selena and Justin will finally be allowed to exist separate from one another in the eyes of media and start a new chapter of their lives.

I know this is more of my opinion on the coverage of their relationship, but let me know what you think! Do you like reading about drama between the former power couple or would you rather we allow Selena and Justin to move on separately?
